Alaskans eligible to receive the annual Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) have a new option for charitable giving this year thanks to House Bill 166 that passed in the last Legislative session. This recent option is called the Pick. Click. Give. – PFD Charitable Contributions Program.
Permanent Fund Dividend recipients can select their favorite charity or nonprofit organization while applying on-line and donate part or their entire dividend to the group. Support for Alaska’s nonprofits has never been easier.
Chairman of the Alaska Giving Coalition Jim Caldarola says of the program, “What better way to start of 2009 than with a commitment to start, or to continue giving back to make Alaska a better place to live. Just think what could happen if every person committed to giving just a portion of their dividend? We hope that by making it a simple and safe and secure process, more people will choose to give. We also encourage those who are already giving to consider upping increasing their donations, since the needs in 2009 are likely to be greater.”
What is the Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD)?
Alaska is rich in natural resources and the State Constitution mandates that its extraordinary wealth in oil, natural gas, timber and fisheries be managed to benefit all Alaskans. The Alaska Permanent Fund Dividend was setup as a trust fund financed by a percentage of royalties collected from oil production. A portion of the Permanent Fund’s earnings are returned to Alaskans each year as a dividend check. The dividend for 2008 was $2,069 for every qualified resident in the state.
