The Crowley tug Alert has been in the news with its dispatch to assist with the problems Shell Alaska has had with their drill unit Kulluk.
Crowley Maritime’s Alert is a Prevention and Response Tug (PRT) under contract to the Alyeska Pipeline Service Company. There have been three tugs built in the Alert Class of tugboats, the Alert, Attentive and Aware. They are 140 feet long, 42 feet wide, draw 20 feet of water, produce 10,192 horsepower driving twin azimuthing thrusters and have a certified bollard pull of 300,000 pounds. These tugs are equipped with firefighting and oil spill response equipment.
