The Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) has released a Google Earth mapping application called the Alaska Lake Database that can provide a wealth of information to resident and visiting fishermen alike. This application makes information available such as contour maps, photos, stocking documentation, historic records and fish data on 1,300 lakes and streams in Alaska.

The Alaska Lake Database (ALDAT) marks water bodies with a colored pin to quickly identify stocked fisheries found in the state. Locations can be found by name, region, stocking date or fish species. The Google Earth map can be overlaid with road and trail layers to add in navigation. Researchers can export lake data from multiple data-sets from the application.

ADF&G Division of Sport Fish Director Charlie Swanton says of the application, “Alaska’s lakes are teeming with fish, and each provides exciting opportunities for sustainable sport fishing opportunities. This innovative approach to providing information in a manner that is easily accessible and tailored to the needs of our Alaskan anglers is consistent with the division’s goal to inform the public about recreational fishing opportunities with an emphasis on exceptional customer service.”
