The Hairy woodpecker (Picoides villosus) is one of the more prolific species of woodpeckers and has a strong presence in the boreal forests of Alaska. They are often attracted to backyard suet feeders. These woodpeckers are considered permanent residents and do not move great distances. More information on Alaskan woodpeckers can be found in the Alaska Department of Fish and Game Wildlife Notebook Series.
